Type sound Venue Cow Palace Year It was from the FM broadcast and had a lot of hiss, but I loved it. I remember listening to that show during my German I final in college, and being blown away by Wharf Rat.

Thanks to everyone that makes this audio available for us all. Reviewer: dstetzer - - July 5, Subject: I enjoyed listening to this today, imensly. Hit the spot, right on time. The sound is much better on the recording of the show that the Dead made.

Sometimes you can find it on ebay, that's where I got an inexpensive copy of the official cd release. The playlist on this night is incredible, one of my all time favorite shows. Garcia gives a clinic for most of the show. One of the most unique sounding stand alone performances ever. A true masterwork of a show. From Playing In The Band on it is pretty flawless. TWO drum solos for a total of less than 2 minutes. The funkiest Samson and Delilah ever. Incredible Scarlet Begonias. The Not Fade Away seems to be a musical recap of the songs that came before, taking on the character of the earlier Scarlet and, Good Lovin' and a few Cream Puff War riffs thrown in as well.

The crushing Morning Dew to wind it up is the icing on the cake. The flashing Grateful Dead sign from the movie slowly lowered from the rafters. Before Sugar Magnolia was half over he was out of the diaper dancing buck naked on stage. Laser light show, slide show of many images including Marvel Comics character Dr. Strange battling his nemesis Eternity. A pleasant time was had by all. Reviewer: rumpled - favorite favorite favorite favorite favorite - February 16, Subject: Grate show I'm pretty sure I downloaded this show from an aud.

I split it into 3 disc's and have now lost or misplaced the first one, meaning the whole first set. I was praying I could come back here and grab it. There's so much music that was available In Aud's here a few years ago. To me it's not about the effin money, bastards. The band didn't care where the music went when they were done with it. It's very upsetting, especially when the quality is of this grade. Wow, what a beautiful sound.. Perhaps the best-played show of ' Live at the Cow Palace sounds lovely, it's worth picking up.

Jerry throws down a few fun licks in Promised Land. A quick happy new year from phil and Bob and off we go. Phil, who has made very clear in his book, is clearly happy to be back playing a full blown Grateful Dead New Years Eve show. Jerry misses a few words in Bertha and Phil drops a few licks of his own.

He is on fire for essentially every note the rest of the way. Typical Mama Tried, nothing more, nothing less. I think Bobby is out of tune for half of it, maybe I would need a closer listen.

Keith falls out of time in a few spots. But by the last 2 minutes everything seems in order. I am a bigger fan of the L. Rain from 80, 81 but this one is very listenable. Donna is good as is bobby. There is something different about the first notes of Deal compared to the previous 5 tunes. Throughout the show his vocals are a little inconsistent, but its NYE right. Maybe a little prep work by Jer before the early show jitters, being forgivable, period ends.

Next will be nothing less than an epic mind bending Playing that pulls from the recent and distant past as well as the distant and upcoming future. God I love Playing reaches an apocalyptic level around and by they are searching in the void.

Only 12 more minutes to go. Within 30 seconds they touch on a theme very briefly, maybe just 2 or 3 notes in 1. Turn on a dime didn't end in 74 and this playing is the evidence. One of those is "Good Lovin'," the '60s hit for the Olympics and the Young Rascals , which the Dead had played frequently between and , but not much since; it would appear on Shakedown Street in Observant Deadheads will note that this is one of the rare occasions when this medley does not include "Franklin's Tower.

The musicians sound comfortable with each other, not to the point of just going through the motions, but without ever working up to any real excitement, either.

The best moments, as is often true of a Grateful Dead concert, are found in the spacy improvisations, particularly in some of the interplay during the minute "Playing in the Band" that concludes the first set and the first disc.

This may not be the album a Deadhead would want to use to introduce a neophyte to the band, but it is, as that fan might put it, "the good ol' Grateful Dead ," reliable and consistent, in a performance that is more about the end of an old era than the beginning of a new one.
